Main lines of research

Cognitive interventions for the rehabilitation of memory disorders (Mild Cognitive Impairment, Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke, dementia), studies on their evidence of efficacy, computer-assisted and robot-mediated (see NAO)rehabilitation training;

Neuro-modulation with audio-visual stimulation via Brain Computer Interface and effects on cognitive function and behavioral disorders (see Neuro-Upper);

Design, design and implementation of applications for early detection of cognitive impairment and neuropsychological assessment (see CRONO); Studies on prospective memory and the identification of an algorithm for measuring allostatic load;

Screening for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD); Complex trauma and emotional responses in earthquake survivors, asylum seekers and refugees;

Fetal memory, effects of music on fetal and neonatal development;

Visual imagination and motor imagination; programs for the application of imagination to the enhancement of sports and nonsports performance;

Emotional intelligence and meaning of life as moderating variables of distress in the general population or specific populations (adolescents, rescue workers, etc.);

Gender-based violence: identification of predisposing factors, short- and long-term effects, ER screening tools and best practices.

Techniques in use and methodologies applied

Neuropsychological screening of minor and major cognitive disorders according to DSM-5 (e.g., WAIS-IV) and clinical screening of psychological disorders (e.g., SCID 5-PD and SCID 5-CV) paper-pencil and computerized type. Computerized cognitive stimulation and cognitive rehabilitation interventions with remote monitoring to increase exercise intensity, improve treatment adherence, and decentralize interventions.

Neuromodulation traimite Brain Computer Interface: Neuro-Upper is the prototype used for Lab testing of audio-visual stimulation protocols for cognitive function enhancement and treatment of anxiety spectrum disorders and depression.

Software for early detection of mild cognitive impairment (CRONO being tested) based on prospective memory and algorithm for measuring allostatic load.

The NAO-H25 robot is used as a cognitive rehabilitation support for individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment in typical protocols and to explore human-robot interaction by evaluating the emotional aspects of interaction.

Description of the main equipment qualifying the activity performed

  • Biofeedback (Emwave);
  • Neuro-Upper (BCI prototype);
  • Humanoid robot NAO-h25.
