Where we are
Sample acceptance: 2nd floor of Barbieri Pavilion (Hall 11).
Laboratory: 5th floor of Central Pavilion (Hall 6).
What we do
Main lines of research:
- Metabolic and nutritional aspects related to the pathogenesis of renal calculosis
- Correlation between lithogenic risk factors and gut microbiota composition
- Renal stone composition and correlations with urinary lithogenic risk factors and clinical course of disease
- Relationships between renal calculosis and metabolic syndrome
Main applied methodologies:
The Laboratory is a Reference Center for renal lithiasis and performs diagnostic activities for the Renal Calculosis Outpatient Clinic and the other facilities of the PDTA "Renal Calculosis" of the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Parma. The object of investigation are urinary lithogenic risk factors on 24-hour urine samples, the determination of which allows a complete metabolic-nutritional framing of lithiasic pathology and therefore of the risk of recurrence. Potentiometric, spectrophotometric and chromatographic techniques are used for this purpose. Through these analyses, grouped into the so-called "urinary lithogenic risk profile," it is possible to formulate personalized strategies for secondary prevention of recurrent forms of kidney stones. The Laboratory is also involved in the analysis, by infrared spectrophotometry, of the composition of kidney stones for the clinical-metabolic framing of the pathology. Finally, the Laboratory also performs screening tests for cystinuria, the main genetically transmitted form of recurrent kidney stones.
Qualifying equipment for the activity performed:
- Ion Chromatograph
- UV-visible Spectrophotometer
