What we do

  • Kidney biopsy management and specimen preparation techniques for light microscopy and immunofluorescence. Particularly: acceptance, subdivision of the frustule using stereomicroscope, fixation of the frustules in the suitable fixatives and by liquid nitrogen, cutting of the sections by cryostat, preparation of immunofluorescence reaction by manual method.
  • Storage of blood and urine samples for database management.

  • Clinicopathologic correlations in diabetic nephropathy
  • New imaging methods for quantification of fibrosis in renal biopsy
  • Use of artificial intelligence for morphoquantitative analysis of histologic lesions in renal biopsy
  • Morphologic characterization of lesions in IgA nephropathy, global and segmental glomerulosclerosis, and monoclonal gammopathies of renal significance
  • Histologic and ultrastructural lesion characterization in HIV-related nephropathy
  • Oncogenic role of BK virus in renal transplant recipients
  • Metabolism in genetically determined crystal nephropathies
  • Donor antibodies-specific non-HLA antibodies in renal transplantation
  • Recurrent post-transplantation nephropathies and glomerulopathies

Techniques in use

  • Cutting frozen tissue sections by cryostat.
  • Setting up direct and indirect immunofluorescence reaction by manual method.
  • Second Harmonic Generation
  • Inclusion of histological specimens in kerosene, cutting and staining with immunohistochemistry techniques and special histological staining
  • Laser microdissection
