What we do
The Histology laboratory is concerned with the predominantly morphological and functional investigation of experimental approaches for tissue regeneration and healing using in vitro models. Lines of research include the evaluation of pharmacological compounds and biomedical devices such as biomaterials and the characterization of cellular responses to them.
Main lines of research:
- In vitro evaluation of the effect of Polynucleotides in cell growth and tissue repair processes.
- Evaluation of the anti-inflammatory effect of polynucleotides on periodontal cell population, comparative in vitro and in vivo study
- Investigation of chitosan scaffold functionalized as a substrate to promote epithelial regeneration, focusing especially on surface enrichment with active biomolecules to promote cell adhesion and scaffold colonization. Research also focuses on strategies for scaffold optimization, taking advantage of new available technologies such as 3D printing.
- Investigation of the cellular effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in order to promote healing and regeneration of soft and mineralized tissues. Specifically, research focuses on synergistic interactions between EMF and biomolecules, optimizing treatment parameters in order to outline new protocols for bone regeneration.
Techniques in use
Cell cultures, primary cultures of bone cells and fibroblasts, cell viability assays, elisa assays, western blotting, cytotoxicity, classical histology, immunohistochemical and cytochemical investigations, immunofluorescence, digital image analysis, confocal microscopy on live cells and fixed preparations.
